Q: What is the difference between Port Tutoring and a learning center?
A: Our tutors will custom design a program (at no additional cost to you) that is tailored directly to your child’s needs, as opposed to a learning center where students often meet with a tutor in a group of 2-4 other students. While we will ask pertinent questions during signup about your child and your tutoring needs, we will not burden or pressure you with long unnecessary sales pitches that many learning centers are notorious for. Additionally, we do not require expensive student assessments.
Q: Where does tutoring take place?
A: Tutoring takes place at our center or in the convenience of your home. Your assigned tutor will meet to you at your convenience, and around your busy schedule. We require that a parent or guardian over the age of 18 be at home for the entire tutoring session.
Q: What are the qualifications of your tutors?
A: Our tutors are credentialed teachers, former teachers, substitute teachers, or college graduates pursuing Master’s degrees and PhD’s with strong skills in your child’s area of need. We check all references, conduct background checks, and personally take every tutor through a thorough interviewing process. Tutors are selected based on personality, ability, enthusiasm, references, teaching experience, and applicable degrees and credentials.
Q: What if my child doesn’t like the tutor?
A: If you do not think the tutor is a good match with your child after the first session, or there was a specific issue, then arrangements will be made for another tutor.
Q: Do I have to sign a contract? How long is each session?
A: Yes we have a basic contract for you to sign before beginning tutoring. The contract does not require a commitment as far as the number of sessions, but we recommend a minimum of four sessions in order to be able to measure progress. The minimum amount of time for each session is one hour.
Q: Do your tutors have experience working with special needs children?
A: Yes, we have certified special education tutors on staff. We will be able to work in conjunction with your school’s guidelines to help your child.
Q: Do you assist families that home school?
A: Yes. We can provide a credentialed tutor to assist with teaching or traditional tutoring. We can also refer you to home school support groups and networks in your area.
Q: How long does the registration process take?
A: After signing up with Port Tutoring, we will contact you within 24 hours to set up the first appointment.
Q: How do your rates compare with other tutoring agencies in Long Island?
A: Our rates compare to many tutoring services, and are probably lower than most. The rate will vary slightly, depending on specific tutor arrangements, availability, and the subjects being tutored.
